Finding Winter's Beauty: Part #1 of Hopefully Many

While walking around my neighborhood lake this morning, I spotted this sight.  My First thought was "F@#$%*#  Ice!!!"  My next thought was "it's kinda pretty".  I have always had a love-hate relationship with winter.  I love the beauty.  I hate the cold.

I plan to spend most of my time this winter in my cozy warm studio sewing up things to help keep us all warm and cozy.  But, I will set aside some time this year to focus on the beauty of winter and I hope to share it here.  Photography has always been an interest of mine and I am planning on taking a class or two this winter to finally learn how to use all of my fancy camera's "bells and whistles".

If all else fails and I can't find anything beautiful about winter to take photos of, I can just hang a quilt in front of the snow and snap a few of that instead...

...and thanks to the kind folks at Andover Fabrics I will have some fun fabrics to play with.   I came home yesterday to a box of goodies that included 2 lovely charm packs of Lizzy House's new collection called Constellations (and yes, it does include a couple of the new pearl bracelet colors).
I am being greedy and keeping one for myself, but am giving away the other one.  Just comment on this post with something you are looking forward to this winter (sewing related or not) for your chance to win.

  1. I'm looking forward to fresh snow covering the ground with a bright blue sky. I really missed that last year.

  2. I look forward to hand sewing in front of the wood stove and watching my fabric color palette shift to richer and darker colors as I realize it does every winter!

    1. I feel that shift coming as well. I never seem to notice it until spring when I make a leap to brighter colors!

  3. I look forward to sitting by the fire, drinking hot chocolate and knitting -- or binding my latest quilt -- while my kiddos play together in the background.

  6. I am looking forward to remembering Dr. Seuss's quote..."You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose" and steering myself directly into my sewing room daily, even if only to look around and get inspired!

    1. Yes Patty! It's not always about getting things done. Sometimes I just hide-out in my studio among the beautiful prints to shake off the winter.

  9. Thanks for your note. I'm looking forward to more quilting time and fewer unfinished projects, even though it's more likely that I will find a buried bit of cloth and start something new instead. I love winter for its icy cool colors and warm indoor spaces. And this morning I was enjoying the brilliance of sunlight reflecting on the downtown skyline. That just has to inspire my next quilt. Ah winter...it's settling in.
